What are the liabilities of being a sponsor ?

The obligations of a sponsor who completes the I-864 Affidavit of Support are clearly spelled out on the I-864 form itself. Basically, the obligation is that if the immigrants income does not reach 125% of the poverty level, the sponsor must provide the immigrant with additional income until it reaches 125% of the poverty level. The obligations start when the immigrant gets a green card, and only ends when one of the following happens: The immigrant becomes a US citizen, The immigrant earns 40 quarters of Social Security credits, The immigrant is no longer a permanent resident and departs the US, The immigrant obtains a new grant of permanent residency in removal proceedings, The immigrant dies, or The sponsor dies
